For the second time in a month, the CSULB Sailing Association and Shields Fleet 20 are welcoming a new Shields skipper. Estela Tejidor, a long-time club member, passed her written test and on-water evaluation on September 21st and has joined the ranks of Fleet 20.

Huge Turnout for Club BBQ

Nearly 100 people attended the CSULB Sailing Association’s new member BBQ on September 6, 2014 at Leeway Sailing Center.

With the help of current skippers, new students had the chance to take the tiller and sail Alamitos Bay on their choice of Capris or Shields.

Students also took the opportunity to sign up for beginner sailing lessons offered by the CSULBSA. The weekly classes (Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 2pm) had nearly 60 student signatures in total.

Epic Surf Hits Long Beach

The CSULBSA suspended sailing activities for the week of August 25-29, as the storm surge from Hurricane Marie brought “the largest swell of waves to hit the Southern California coastline in over a decade,” according to the OC Register.

Weasel Cup Takes Over Alamitos Bay

The CSULB Sailing Association’s annual “anti-regatta,” The Weasel Cup, returned on Sunday August 24, 2014 and lived up to the event’s fun and absurd traditions.

Nearly a dozen club members participated in a full day of non-traditional races. The highlights included a scavenger hunt, a tag-the-pin-buoy race, a relay race, and the first ever “Survivor”-inspired Capri paddle and Laser rig race.

Amidst the Tall Ships

The wildly popular Tall Ships Challenge 2014 festival came to LA Harbor on August 20th, one of three West Coast stops for the event.

If you were in San Pedro — and you weren’t distracted by the sight of the “World’s Largest Rubber Duck” — you would have seen the CSULB Sailing Association and two of our Shields weaving in and out of the dozen tall ships sailing the harbor.

The CSULB Sailing Association and Shields Fleet 20 would like to congratulate Tatiana Misares on becoming the club’s newest Shields skipper.

Tatiana, who serves as the club’s Commodore (student president), passed her written test and on-water evaluation on August 19th and was welcomed into the ranks of Fleet 20.

Shields Summer Racing Series continues on Saturday, August 2nd as all three boats will be going head-to-head in Long Beach Harbor.

Call time is 11:00am.

Camel Racing Takes Two from the Fleet

The Sopwith Camel was a British-class fighter plane whose dominance in the air helped the Allies win World War I. Interesting Jeopardy! fact, sure, but what does that have to do with yachting?

The biplane has become the inspiration behind the name and winning ways for “Sopwith Camel Racing,” one of the 3 CSULBSA race teams competing in the Shields Summer Racing Series.

On June 28th, Team SCR brought home first place points in 2 out of 3 races, taking the early lead in the club’s Summer Series Two race standings.

Racing Continues June 28

With Series One now in the books, the CSULBSA Shields Summer Racing Series is kicking off Series Two on Saturday June 28th at 11:00am.

Denito Syndicate Racing, Sail Team ‘Murrica, and Sopwith Camel Racing will be back at it again in Long Beach Harbor for a minimum of two races.
