Laser Lunatics Take the ‘Capsize Cruise’

On August 16th, the Sailing Association continued its annual summer tradition of circumnavigating Naples Island in Alamitos Bay. The event is known as the “Capsize Cruise” because members are forced to capsize Lasers and swim them under two small bridges in the bay.

Denito Wins Pop Tops by Less than a Boat Length

1…..2…..3.  That was the difference between winning and losing on June 25th at the final race of Seal Beach Yacht Club’s “Pop Tops” Series 2. Team Denito and skipper Dennis Trombley edged out skipper Mike Fratantoro’s Strong Beach Sailing squad by about two-thirds of a boat length for a win in the series’ 4th race, a win that vaulted Denito into first place in the final Shields Class standings.

With Team Strong Beach holding onto a two-point lead after the first three weeks of racing, Trombley and crew (Robert Munroe, John Majkut and Gwynn Markle) had to win Race 4 on June 25th to force a tie in the standings. In classic Denito style, the team came from behind for the victory. After a one race throw-out, the series went down to a tiebreak, which Denito took for winning the final race.

Pop Tops Series 2 lasted four weeks (one race per week) from June 4 to June 25, 2015.

Strong Sailing at Memorial Day Regatta

It took seven races to decide a Shields Class winner in this year’s ABYC Memorial Day Regatta, but after a two-day back and forth between skippers Dennis Trombley and Mike Fratantoro it was Mike Frat’s team, Strong Beach Sailing, who eked out a one-point victory.

The regatta was tied after six races but Strong Beach took first place in Race Seven for the regatta win, followed by Trombley’s Denito Syndicate Racing in second and Mossy Kennedy’s team in third.

The event was held from May 23 to 24, 2015, and notably it was the first time CSULB Sailing has ever entered three of its Shields in a regatta.

Mission Bay Trip Canceled for First Time Ever

The worst California drought in a hundred years is still in full force, so no one in the CSULBSA could have guessed that our annual after-finals weekend in Mission Bay, San Diego would be canceled by rain for the first time ever.

But the Spring’s first substantial rainfall in Southern California on May 15th was enough for flooding near Mission Bay and triggered health warnings for the bay and ocean beaches.

With the camping sites, beaches and bay sailing all closed, the trip — which was scheduled for May 15 to 18 — was canceled.

No plans are set for rescheduling the trip, but the club is planning an alternative: a two-weekend Hobie sailing fest beginning May 30th.

Fleet 20 Competes Against the Nation’s Best in Monterey

From May 1st to May 3rd 2015, CSULB Fleet 20 sailed in the Shields Ocean – Great Lakes Challenge Cup (OGLC), a class regatta hosted by the Shields Class Association. The event invites all Shields fleets from across the U.S. to send one boat to compete in a series of five races.

This year’s regatta was hosted by Monterey Peninsula Yacht Club (Shields Fleets 7 & 12). It was a formidable class of five competitors, featuring the No. 1, 3 & 5 finishers in last year’s Shields National Regatta, as well as the defending champion of the 2014 OGLC Cup.

Despite sending a crew of some of the CSULB Sailing Club’s most experienced skippers, Fleet 20 ended the five-race regatta in last place with 23 points (5-5-5-4-4).

Two-time national champion Bill Berry of visiting Fleet 10 (Marion, Massachusetts) took first place in the event after winning two photo finishes on the second day of racing (9 points overall).
