CSULB President Joins the Sailing Club

CSULB sailing club member Tatiana Misares with President Jane Close Conoley

On December 5th, the CSULB Sailing Association welcomed university President Dr. Jane Close Conoley aboard our Shields fleet for a special group sail.

More than 20 club students and members greeted President Conoley and other university guests, then crewed the Shields for a quick “harbor cruise” through Alamitos Bay.

We’re Thankful for Sailing!

Before students head home for Thanksgiving dinner with their families, the CSULB Sailing Association hosted a Turkey Day feast of its own on Tuesday Nov 24.

The club rigged up our Capris and sailed from Leeway Sailing Center to Marina Pacifica for Thanksgiving lunch at Chipotle.

Safety First: Club Invests in New PFDs

The black and gold of CSULB aren’t just the colors of our Shields keelboats, now they can be found on our club’s new PFDs. 

Thanks to generous funding from the California Division of Boating & Waterways (DBW) Aquatic Center Grant Program, the Sailing Association was able to purchase two dozen new life vests for its instructional programs.

Newest Shields Skipper Announced

The CSULB Sailing Association is pleased to announce that club member Kyle Henneberque is the newest skipper to join Shields Fleet 20. Kyle, who currently serves as the club’s commodore (president), completed his checkout in September 2015.

One-day Clinic Gives CSULB Students a Crash Course in Sailing

On October 3rd, the CSULB Sailing Association hosted a one-day beginner sailing clinic for 10 CSULB students in the university’s “Outdoor Adventure” (OA) program.

The OA program is operated by the university’s Student Recreation and Wellness Center, part of Associated Students, Inc (ASI).

Nearly all of the students arrived with no previous sailing experience, but by the end of the day they were tacking and jibing like seasoned sailors.

CSULB Sailor Competes in Rolex Farr40 Worlds in Long Beach

CSULB student Tatiana Misares was one of 170 sailors to compete this week for the Rolex Farr40 World Championship in Long Beach.

The event, which was sponsored by Rolex and hosted by Long Beach Yacht Club, invited some of the world’s preeminent sailors to Long Beach from September 24-27, 2015. 

Misares, a 24-year-old senior in CSULB’s School of Engineering (and former commodore of the Sailing Association), sailed aboard the Farr40 “Temptress,” which finished 13th overall in the international fleet of 17 yachts.

Cleaning Up the Coast

The California Coastal Commission held its annual statewide cleanup day on Saturday, September 19th and the CSULB Sailing Association pitched in to help clean the beaches.

Amongst the crowd of volunteers combing the beaches near Belmont Peninsula,  a number of CSULBSA members grabbed orange buckets and hauled over 25 pounds of trash of the beach.

Join Us at Our New Member BBQ, September 5

Like food? Like sailing? (Or want to learn?)

If you are a CSULB student and answered yes to either of these questions, you should attend the CSULB Sailing Association’s annual New Member Welcome BBQ on Saturday, September 5th from 12:00pm to 4:00pm.

The BBQ is our club’s “open house” with free food and sailing for interested students to learn more about us and to sign up for beginner sailing lessons. (Lessons start Sept 12th & 13th so this is your last chance to sign up in 2015!)

The event is held at Leeway Sailing Center, 5437 E Ocean Blvd, Long Beach, CA 90803.

Visit Our Booth at CSULB Week of Welcome Sept 2-3

Once again the Sailing Association will be at CSULB’s annual Week of Welcome fair on Wednesday 9/2 and Thursday 9/3 from 11:00am to 2:00pm.

Stop by for information on the club and how you can get involved and learn to sail. The club offers beginner sailing classes in Alamitos Bay on Saturdays and Sundays for those with little or no previous experience.

Head to the upper campus quad and look for the big, colorful catamaran sailboat!
